A genuine lesson in monetary theory and history, the article covers the years preceding the introduction of Euro and offers the adequate framework for an understanding of present and future monetary developments. The truth is revealed now: the European monetary unification is only the political, theoretically anticipated and temporary, solution for the inherent problems of an international monetary system of competitive fiat money (inflation, monetary and stock exchange crises, the increasing state debt). May we not be deluded: the rules of the games remain the same; unfortunately, the cartel will only intensify the negative consequences of monetary manipulation. The viable alternative is reachable: commodity money, as a result of people’ unhampered choices. The article completes admirably, with Rothbardian flavour, the well-known What Has Government Done to Our Money?
