Complementing his discussion in The Theory of Socialism and Capitalism, H.-H. Hoppe compares monarchy and democracy from a tragedy of the commons perspective. A privately owned monopoly of exploitation tends to be less economically and culturally damaging, though politically weaker, than communal ownership by temporary "caretakers". Monarchy breeds democracy, however, as the principle of institutional aggression, imbedded in the former, finds a more competitive expression in the latter. Whether a non-aggressive natural order carries with it its own meaning and assertive weight, or can only inspire and thrive as the political dimension of a revived aristocracy of the spirit, except this time with royal priesthood universalized into a genuine monarcho-anarchy under the Rule of Law, is another matter.
