This rare photo is of the International Conference of Business Cycle Institutes, sponsored by the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research in Vienna, Austria, July 9-11, 1936.

Ludwig von Mises is seated in the central of the picture facing the camera (being “politically incorrect” holding a cigarette).

At the head table at the far end of the picture is Oskar Morgenstern (then director of the Austrian Institute), chairing the session (author of “The Limits of Economic Policy” [1934], co-author of “The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior” [1944], and author of “On the Accuracy of Economic Observations” [1950]).

Sitting immediately below Morgenstern is Gottfried Haberler (author of “The Theory of International Trade” [1933] and “Prosperity and Depression” [1937]).

The bald-headed man located just above Mises’ head is the Austrian economist, Richard von Strigl (author of “Capital and Production” [1934]).

To the right of Strigl is: Jan Tinbergen (author of “Business Cycles in the United States” [1939] and “On the Theory of Economic Policy” [1952], and Nobel Prize winner in economics, 1969).

Sitting closest to the camera is Bertil Ohlin (prominent member of the “Stockholm School of Economics,” author of “The Cause and Phases of the World Economic Depression” [1931] and “Interregional and International Trade” [1933], and Nobel Prize winner in economics, 1977).

Sitting to Ohlin’s right is the free market Polish economist, Michael Heilperin (author of “International Monetary Economics” [1939] and “Studies in Economic Nationalism” [1960]).
